The Romney Marshes are famous for smuggling with records reporting gangs of up to 300 men fighting running battles across isolated beaches and fields; hiding smuggled alcohol, wool, tea, brandy and tobacco in the shops and churches of the Marshes and often aided by local villagers. There is even considerable evidence that smuggling started on the Marshes with many of the most famous smuggling gangs operating from villages, ports and pubs of the Marshes. These pages reveal the activities and crimes of Marsh smugglers, the infamous gangs, their members and punishments when caught.

Wild and weird, isolated, unique, historic, ever changing and the end-of-the line. All words aptly used to describe Dungeness headland. Located at the most southerly point in Kent and pointing out in to the channel like a rose-thorn, Dungeness is a special place in every sense with houses encased in rubber, lighthouses miles inland and world-famous unique flora and fauna.
