This website is the online home of Andrew Leaning, its primary function is to provide an extensive library and information resource (see below for the most popular articles) about the historic, mysterious and internationally important Romney Marshes in Kent, where I live; a knowledge-base of server, networking and IT security information and lastly a place where friends and family can reach me.
The Romney Marshes are a mysterious and enchanting region of Kent, rich in history, story and legend. A place of outstanding natural beauty, where the sun casts glorious colours across wide-open skies as mists swirl above slow moving rivers and still, dark, dykes. These pages detail unique geology, geography, world-famous habitats, geomorphology, flora, fauna and wildlife of this region; its distinguished literary past, ancient history, its far reaching military and political influence and the folklore, legends, stories, tourist attractions and modern development of this magical corner of England.
Tucked away in one 'corner' of Romney Marsh diggers are at work building one of the largest onshore wind farms in South England. The controversial Little Cheyne Court Wind Farm by npower renewables will see 26 2,300 kW1 turbines erected from May 2008 onwards, generating electricity from early 2009.
The Romney Marshes are famous for smuggling with records reporting gangs of up to 300 men fighting running battles across isolated beaches and fields; hiding smuggled alcohol, wool, tea, brandy and tobacco in the shops and churches of the Marshes and often aided by local villagers. There is even considerable evidence that smuggling started on the Marshes with many of the most famous smuggling gangs operating from villages, ports and pubs of the Marshes. These pages reveal the activities and crimes of Marsh smugglers, the infamous gangs, their members and punishments when caught.
Wild and weird, isolated, unique, historic, ever changing and the end-of-the line. All words aptly used to describe Dungeness headland. Located at the most southerly point in Kent and pointing out in to the channel like a rose-thorn, Dungeness is a special place in every sense with houses encased in rubber, lighthouses miles inland and world-famous unique flora and fauna.
